Doyle Brunson is still at the top of his game at the ripe age of 77. Not only is he a successful poker player, but he still finds time for the ladies at strip clubs! He’s still playing in beer pong tournaments when most people his age are getting their drivers license revoked. And some new research by Dr. Jeffrey Cummings may finally explain this phenomenon.

The research has proven that by playing poker, you lower your risk of suffering from Alzheimer’s disease by 50%. Dr. Jeffrey Cummings is one of the world’s best Alzheimer’s disease researchers, and believes you can greatly lower the Alzheimer’s risk by playing poker twice a week.

Cumming’s research coincides with a French study from 2009 involving 5,000 old people playing a variety of mental games like poker. After looking at the results, poker came out to be most effective at defending the brain against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Dr. Cummings told us why old people have positive results from playing poker when he said, “We have a social idea of what retirement consists of and we need to re-examine that idea. The logical extension of the data we have on dementia is that a person who is still capable of working, who is mentally stimulated with a strong sense of purpose, is better off from the cognitive point of view continuing to engage in that position.”

What it comes down to is not being a bug on a log. If the elderly just sit in the nursing homes and watch TV all day, they’re not stimulated enough and will continue to diminish their brain. Playing poker online or other activities will obviously be helpful to them. Once you’ve reached the age where you’re back in diapers…it might be too late, so hop on the band wagon now and hopefully you win some money in the process.
