Poor Omaha Hi-Lo Hands in Disguise

A lot of beginner Omaha Hi-Lo players think that it’s really cool to win half of the pot. After all, if you only contribute 30% of the pot and win back 50% of it, this seems like a good investment. However, the truth is that going for half of the pot in Omaha Hi-Lo is […]

A lot of beginner Omaha Hi-Lo players think that it’s really cool to win half of the pot. After all, if you only contribute 30% of the pot and win back 50% of it, this seems like a good investment. However, the truth is that going for half of the pot in Omaha Hi-Lo is eventually going to burn you. This is especially the case if you keep playing the following hands.

Middle Connectors

A middle connectors hand in Omaha Hi-Lo looks like this: 6-7-8-9. Now this hand looks nice and neat, but it’s rarely going to help you win. For one thing, you have no shot at scooping the pot, and another thing is that you have little chance of winning the high hand with a mid-range straight.

A-2/Nothing Else

A hand with A-2 and little else behind it is another set of cards that you’re better off mucking. Sure A-2 gives you a great shot to win half of the pot, but if you only have 6-10 unsuited to go along with it, you stand little chance of winning the whole pot.

Three Suited Hands

The worst part about these hands is that they take away an out from your hand. So instead of having 9 outs to a flush, you now only have 8 outs. Only play a three-suited hand if this hand has some other value besides just a flush opportunity.

Three of a Kind

A three of a kind is even worse than a three-suited hand because you only have one out to hit a three of a kind. Even if you do hit the three of a kind, there’s no guaranteed that you’ll win the high hand making this even riskier to play. In fact, this might be the worst hand out of any of the ones mentioned.
