One of the biggest flaws people have with poker is that they don’t know how to properly learn poker strategy. For instance, they go out and read generalized poker articles that are written by somebody that plays $1/$2 No-Limit Hold’em, or they watch high stakes poker TV shows and try to apply some of what they’ve seen there. In any case, they are looking at the wrong sources for the specific game that they play.

If you truly want to get better at poker, you have to focus on the individual games you play. For example, if you play $0.10/$0.25 NL Hold’em, try to find other players who play this game and see what they have to say. The best place to find common ground is at poker forums because these offer great discussions of all the limits and games. The bigger the forum, the more likely you are to find information about your specific game.

For instance, if you play $5 SNG’s, comb the forums to find some specific advice on what successful players have to say about this particular game. A lot of very good players like to hang around forums, and most love being the authority when they’re good at poker. You should also ask around to see what the best books are for the game/limit that you play while you’re on the forum.

Of course, this isn’t to say that you can’t still get plenty of good advice from general articles and poker books. After all, Dan Harrington’s books are still considered relevant by many players even today! But just keep in mind that if you really want to be good at poker, you need to start paying attention to the details, and seeking out advice that applies specifically to you.
